Set in Chicago, Chi-Raq is a film about the gang violence on the city’s south side. The film takes its name from local rappers who compare the tough streets of their city to an embattled Iraq. Spike made the film to bring attention to the gun violence that kills 88 Americans every day.

Chi-Raq was directed by Spike Lee and written by Lee and Kevin Willmott. The film is based on Aristophanes’ Lysistrata, a classical Greek comedy in which women withhold physical affection from their husbands as punishment for fighting in war. The film stars Nick Cannon, Wesley Snipes, Teyonah Parris, Jennifer Hudson, Steve Harris, Harry Lennix, D.B. Sweeney, Angela Bassett, John Cusack, and Samuel L. Jackson.

One of Spike Lee’s best films, Chi-Raq is outrageous, infuriating, provocative, thoughtful, musical, and very moving.
