The Tragedy of Macbeth

Big Film Design’s latest project, Joel Coen’s The Tragedy of Macbeth, opens in select theaters in the US on December 25, following its one-day worldwide IMAX screening on December 5, and its opening night premiere at the 59th New York Film Festival on September 24. The film will begin streaming on Apple TV+ on January 14.

“We’re proud to open the festival with a film that immediately joins the ranks of the great screen Shakespeares,” said Dennis Lim, Director of Programming for the New York Film Festival. “Working with brilliant collaborators, including Denzel Washington and Frances McDormand in stunning form, Joel Coen has made an inspired and urgent interpretation of an eternally relevant classic, a moral thriller that speaks directly to our time.”

BFD designed the titles for the film, continuing our long creative history with the Coens, dating back to Miller’s Crossing. We created a custom font that matched the hand-lettered book cover found by Production Designer Stefan Dechant and Joel Coen.

The Tragedy of Macbeth is Joel Coen’s first solo directing project. Read about his work on the film, and the dynamics of working with two powerhouse stars and only one director.

The Tragedy of Macbeth is based on the tragedy of the same name by William Shakespeare. It will be the first film directed by one of the Coen brothers without the other's involvement.
