She's Gotta Have It (TV Series)

Big Film Design is proud to have created all the visual effects and graphics for the new Netflix series, She’s Gotta Have It, which starts streaming Thanksgiving Day.

The team at BFD, led by Visual Effects Supervisor and Creative Director Randy Balsmeyer, completed nearly 400 shots for Spike Lee’s new Netflix series, She’s Gotta Have It. BFD was the exclusive vendor for all graphics and effects in the series. Their work included screen replacements (phones, tablets, computers), cosmetic work, “floating” effects and tons of text graphics throughout the series. Balsmeyer is honored to have worked with Lee on every film of his since his second film, School Daze.

Director Spike Lee burst on to the American film scene in 1986 with She’s Gotta Have It. The film, which launched Lee’s career, was notable for it’s revolutionary portrayal of female sexuality by its main character, Nola Darling.

31 years later, Lee is reviving his seminal film as a Netflix series, but this time Darling (played by DeWanda Wise) is even more empowered. She declares herself a “sex positive, polyamorous, pansexual” who has never been concerned with the idea of monogamy. But, as she’ll remind you, “I’m not a freak, I’m not a sex addict, and I’m damn sure nobody’s property.”

Lee directed and produced the series with his wife Tonya Lewis Lee, who had the original vision to turn the movie into a television series.

This Thanksgiving, after you polish off the turkey and pumpkin pie, we hope you’ll settle back and binge on this hilarious, outrageous and moving series. Spoiler alert: the series builds to episode 10, which takes place on Thanksgiving 2016.
