Matchbox: The Movie
Streaming globally on Apple TV October 9.
Directed by Sam Hargrave (Extraction) and starring John Cena and Jessica Biel, Matchbox The Movie takes Mattel’s iconic toy cars and turns them into a globe-trotting action comedy with plenty of cars, crashes, and practical stunts along the way.
For the main and end title sequences, Big Film Design’s Randy Balsmeyer teamed up with Hargrave and editor Dirk Westervelt to give the film a distinctly ’90s cinematic feel. The idea was to capture the imperfect magic of the era when kids were sprawled on the floor, racing Matchbox cars around the living room. We leaned into the look of classic film opticals to make the titles feel like they came straight from a well-loved ’90s film print.
The end title sequence takes that idea a step further, with an intentional nod to Steven Spielberg’s Sugarland Express.
Even though Matchbox The Movie was built with blockbuster-scale action and practical stunt work, Apple Studios and Mattel Films are bringing the adventure straight to home screens worldwide.
